A mermaid rides an extraordinary seahorse in this large-scale ceramic sculpture, handmade in South Africa by Love Art Ceramic. Sculpted by Sfiso Mokoena and hand-painted by Ntokozo Shabalala, the 20-inch work transforms one of the ocean's most delicate creatures into a bold, fantastical statement piece. Sfiso Mokoena is an established South African ceramic sculptor whose work has appeared at Christie's, including highly imaginative animal-form ceramics. Here, his sculptural detail is paired with Shabalala's vibrant orange, blue and yellow decoration, from the seahorse's armored body and curled tail to the mermaid riding along its back. The seahorse also has a fascinating South African connection. The country is home to the Knysna seahorse, an endemic species found only in three South African estuaries. This gives the marine subject an unexpected connection to the country where the sculpture was created. A dramatic contemporary ceramic for collectors looking for a work that combines South African artistry, wildlife and fantasy.
