Turtle Tales

The Ardmore studio in KwaZulu Natal is not far from the Indian Ocean and the artists have enjoyed exploring underwater life as part of their latest exhibition Kingdom of the Zulus from the Savanna to the Sea.Fée highlighted the many similarities between marine life in the tropics of Africa, Florida and the Caribbean in her presentations on board the Pascoe collectors cruise. As well as fish, dolphins and whales, the Ardmore artists have focused on turtles as there are many different types to be found locally.

On the shores of Zululand, Loggerhead and Leatherback sea turtles breed in the local waters and lay their eggs in the sand. The same species dig nests for their eggs on the Florida beaches and two months later, scores of tiny turtle hatchlings emerge from the sand at night and clamber into the water.
