Birds of Africa — Ardmore-style illustration with crowned crane, hoopoe, and weaverbird

PASCOE GALLERY

Birds of Africa

Sculpted from the wild, painted by hand

EXPLORE THE COLLECTION

A crowned crane mid-stride, every golden filament of its crest rendered in clay. A sunbird frozen at the edge of a bloom, wings still humming with color. These are the birds of KwaZulu-Natal — sculpted by hand, fired in wood kilns, and painted with the patience of the landscape itself.

From bold sculptural teapots crowned with herons to delicate ornamental sunbirds perched on flowering branches, each one-of-a-kind ceramic captures the grace and vitality of Africa's avian world. The artists draw from life — observing the crowned crane's deliberate step, the hoopoe's fanned crest, the weaverbird's patient architecture.

Each piece carries the stillness of a real encounter — the moment before flight.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

From the Studios of KwaZulu-Natal

Every bird in this collection was sculpted and painted by South African ceramic artists working in studios across KwaZulu-Natal. The artists draw from the natural world around them — crowned cranes stepping through grasslands, sunbirds hovering at aloe blooms, weaverbirds constructing their hanging nests with meticulous care.

Each work is one-of-a-kind. Sculpted by hand, fired in wood kilns, painted with fine brushwork, glazed, and fired again. The process takes days. The result carries the warmth of the landscape and the precision of the maker's hand.
