The Flower and Its Visitors
On the mountain slopes of the Western Cape grows a flower so singular that South Africa placed it on its coat of arms. The protea, wide as two open hands and layered like a crown, blooms in a landscape called the fynbos, a floral kingdom found only at the southern tip of Africa.
Its nectar is the richest table in that landscape. Cape honey bees work the layered petals through the morning; sugarbirds and sunbirds arrive with their curved beaks for the deeper stores. In return they carry pollen from crown to crown, and the hillsides stay in flower. The flower feeds its visitors, and its visitors keep the flower alive.
That partnership is the subject the ceramic studios of KwaZulu-Natal sculpt best. At Love Art Ceramic and Senzo Duma Ceramics, the bees are modelled leg by leg and wing by wing, the petals built up in layered clay, the birds perched exactly where they would land. We have gathered these works into one collection.
Sculpted From Life
Look closely at these works and the landscape opens up: a leopard resting beneath the blooms, a strelitzia unfolding beside a sunbird, a bee the size of your thumb crossing a petal. The artists paint what they grew up with, and it shows.
Each work is hand built, hand painted, signed by its makers and one of a kind.
