ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Somandla Aaron Ntshalintshali
Artworks certified AAA by Fée Halsted represent the highest standard of excellence for Ardmore. This magnificent AAA elephant vase was created by two of Ardmore’s finest artists, sculptor Somandla Ntshalintshali and painter, Jabu Nene, who was last month’s featured artist.
Somandla was born in 1980 at the Ardmore Farm and is related to Bonnie Ntshalintshali, Fèe’s first assistant. Originally, he worked as a gardener at Ardmore and used to play with the clay at lunch time. In 2003, Fèe offered him the opportunity to train as a sculptor. Somandla’s animals have a natural lyrical grace and his plants are well observed, as shown by the African Whistling Thorn on the body of the prestigious elephant vase. In 2011, Somandla’s baboon platter was presented to the Empress of Japan and in the same year his leopard urn was selected to represent South Africa at the Korean Biennale, where he won a merit award. A majestic elephant vase by Somandla was exhibited at Art Basel Miami in 2014 and sold on opening night.
