Genets have been photographed hitch-hiking on buffalos and rhinos in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park just north of Durban. It is not known why the genets are using these mega-herbivores as their personal bush transport service but the cameras show that it is not just one resourceful animal. Genets are cat-like animals although they are not members of the Felidae cat family. They are highly agile creatures with exceptional climbing skills and spend much of their time in trees. They are the only members of the Viverridae family able to stand on their hind legs. Genets are silent and stealthy hunters and glide along the ground to stalk their prey of small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. Their distinctive ringed tails are as long as their bodies and make striking designs on Ardmore vases.
