A powerful lion carries a Zulu woman dressed in traditional-inspired ceremonial attire in this imaginative ceramic sculpture handmade in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Sculpted by Motsamai Sello and hand-painted by Minenhle Nene, the rider wears an elaborate isicholo, a headdress traditionally associated with married Zulu women and now particularly connected with weddings and ceremonial occasions. Look closer and the sculpture begins to tell a larger story. The rider carries objects associated with daily and family life, while another small figure rests against her back. The combination recalls the importance of women, family, craft and tradition in Zulu culture, all carried symbolically on the back of one of Africa's most powerful animals.
